Sometime back, I stumbled upon a blind spot in knowledge within one organization — industry reports. To my surprise, not everyone seems to be aware of their existence. Even seasoned practitioners like you may discover a report they weren’t previously aware of. In this article, I aim to shed light on various industry reports that offer valuable insights and trends. However, it’s crucial to approach these reports with caution, considering potential distortions and unrepresentative results. In particular, the number of respondents to the original survey and their contextual background should be considered. Because sometimes some of the results may not be far from a well-known joke: “According to an internet survey, 100% of respondents had internet access”. Let’s delve into this treasure trove of information, but remember to engage in critical thinking.
It all began in 2006 with the release of the first “State of Agile Report” by VersionOne. It is the biggest survey and most well-known report. It is still active now. It was releasing reports annually. From 2006 to 2019, by VersionOne. VersionOne was acquired by CollabNet, so in 2020 and 2021, it was presented by CollabNet (versions 14 and 15, respectively). In 2022, the report was presented by digital.ai, which is the new name for CollabNet VersionOne following a rebranding.
The success of this one inspired (as I see it) many others. Below, I provide a list with brief information, a link to the most recent report, some historical background, including the number of reports available and the year the organization started, as well as the approximate number of respondents for the most recent version of the report, etc. Considering most of the reports are annual, the number of versions and age correlate directly. Sorted by the number of versions, then the number of respondents. Also, I’m not including here multiple reports that appeared in recent years about salaries for specific roles (like the Scrum Master salary report or PO salary report). Here are the reports:

Please, let me know in a comment or direct message if it was useful for you. Also, I’d like to hear if I’m missing your favorite report – I’d be willing to add it. I hope to keep this version of the article up to date over time, so that when new reports and versions of reports are published. If this topic is interesting enough, I could bring a few more articles with some insights I had from these reports.
